It's All Happening At Rega!
Following the arrival to rave reviews of the Rega Planar 3 in the last month there is lots more news from Rega of 2 more models that have had ground up design implemented to achieve great sound at their price point. The next few weeks sees the arrival of the Rega Planar 2.The original Rega Planar 2 turns 40 in 2016.In 1976,3 years after Rega's creation, the Planar 2 launched as part of one of the brand's first turntables. It's S-shaped tonearm was then replaced in 1984 with Rega's RB250 tonearm, and at the turn of the 21st century a brand new version of the deck named the P2 2000 was available till 2005.
There is a puzzle happening regarding the original vs the latest rendition as the original and the new side by side present a challenging spot the difference situation. There is a new 24 volt low noise motor, newly designed central bearing, and upgraded platter with a new floating glass "Optiwhite" design.Rega has also designed new feet to make the deck more stable. The Planar 2 has a new RB220 tonearm, which features new ultra low friction ball bearings. It also hasa new bearing housing and an automatic bias setting, making it plug'n'play.
As reviewed by What HiFi magazine......"The Rega delivers the bass line with punch....anyone well versed in Rega decks will no doubt recognise it's sonic stamp. The Rega has the necessary precision and rhythmic know-how to coordinate accurately the soundstage. The ability to tie all the strands together and paint them on a precise and spacious canvas seems to come easy to the Rega. The Planar 2is a high performing deck at a competitive price."
